The complete strophic hymn melody, Abide with Me (Eventide), is sub-structural to (embedded within) each of the six rondo sections (strophic variations) in the fourth-movement finale, Adagio, of Gustav Mahler’s Ninth Symphony (his last completed work). One hundred years transpired between the 1912 world premiere of the Ninth (by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Bruno Walter) and the issuance of the newly-published article about the hymn’s discovery in the finale (2012).
